Cadence Theatre Company Announces Mainstage
Season for 2013/2014

Offerings include Good People, Clybourne Park and Detroit

Richmond, VA—Cadence Theatre Company is pleased to announce its new titles for the 2013/2014 mainstage season. The upcoming Theatre Gym season of bold, contemporary, award-winning plays will feature two of the most widely staged new plays in the country – Clybourne Park, winner of the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and 2012 Tony Award for Best Play, and Good People, winner of the 2011 New York Drama Critics Circle for Best Play. The third Cadence play, Detroit, was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 2011 and recently ended a successful Off-Broadway run following its world premiere at Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago.

Cadence Theatre Company’s Artistic and Managing Director shares, “These plays have been chosen for their artistic merit, their accessibility through humor, and their candid exploration of the human condition. We are excited beyond belief to bring these important stories to Richmond audiences.”

Good People by David Lindsay-Abaire
Directed by Anna Johnson
October 17 – November 9, 2013

Good People won the 2011 New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best Play. The work treats severe financial hardship, the single parenting of a disabled child, and the consequences of our decisions with sensitivity and candor. About Lindsay-Abaire and his play, Jason Clark (Slant Magazine) wrote: “As sensitive a modern playwright as can be heard these days, (Lindsay-Abaire’s characters) sound like doomed-to-fail, ivory tower-slanted scenarios… (but) Instead of holding up the play’s lead character Margaret as a victim of hard luck, the playwright shrewdly uses her as an example of how choices can make or break us, and the smallest twists of fate determine our path.”

Clybourne Park by Bruce Norris
Directed by Keri Wormald
February 20 – March 15, 2014

Clybourne Park won the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and the 2012 Tony Award for Best Play, among several other awards and nominations. The play looks openly at grief and socio-racial isolation. Clybourne Park is a dramatic follow-through to A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry; it is a moving and thought-provoking story of racism and how it evolves but never ends. Laced with satire, the play asks the audience to closely examine its own community identity.

Detriot by Lisa D’Amour
Directed by Anna Johnson
May 1 – May 24, 2014

A 2011 Pulitzer Prize finalist, Detroit is a dark comedy which takes the suburban American dream and exposes it as a ridiculous hoax. The New York Post says that D’Amour’s piercing scrutiny “totally nails the great, deep malaise of middle-class suburbia, with a sustained energy and a wicked eye for telling details.” First performed by Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago, Detroit has recently finished a successful run off-Broadway.

Subscriptions and packages are currently available for all seasons. Single tickets will go on sale July 1.
