Richmond, VA—Cadence Theatre Company is pleased to announce its new titles for the 2014-2015 Mainstage Season at Theatre Gym. The upcoming season of contemporary, award-winning plays and musicals produced in partnership with Virginia Rep. The shows include Sight Unseen by Donald Margulies, winner of the Obie Award for Drama and nominated for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Tony Award-nominated Caroline, or Change, book and lyrics by Tony Kushner and score by Jeanine Tesori, will follow. Caroline, or Change will star Desiree Roots in the title role, and the musical will be included in the 11th Annual Acts of Faith Festival. The third production will be Sam Shepard’s critically acclaimed A Lie of the Mind, which won the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play and the New York Critics’ Circle Award for Best Play.

Anna Johnson, Cadence Theatre Company’s Artistic and Managing Director, shares, “These plays have been chosen for their artistic merit, their accessibility through humor, and their candid exploration of the human condition. We are excited beyond belief to bring these important stories to Richmond audiences and to celebrate three decades stories written by some of the world’s greatest leaders of contemporary theatre.”

Sight Unseen by Donald Margulies
October 16-November 8, 2014 (opening October 18)
Direction by Rusty Wilson
This humorous and insightful Obie Award-winning, Pulitzer Prize-nominated work tells the tale of a wildly successful American Jewish artist whose British retrospective show leaves him pierced by racism and false memory. His journey causes him to question his purpose and reinvent the basis for his self worth.

Caroline, or Change by Tony Kushner and Jeanine Tesori
February 19-March 14, 2015 (opening February 21)
Direction and Choreography by Chase Kniffen
and Musical Direction by Anthony Smith

It’s 1963. Caroline is an African American laundress, a single mother serving a family in the Deep South. As the socio-political world violently spins into a new order, Caroline’s faith and relationships are tested, but through her sacrifices, the depth of human bonds endures. Kushner and Tesori’s Tony Award-nominated musical is an inspired amalgam of blues, gospel and traditional Jewish melodies.

A Lie of the Mind by Sam Shepard
April 30-May 23, 2015 (opening May 2)
Direction by Anna Johnson
Musical Direction and Original Score by Drew Perkins
This Winner of the 1986 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play and New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best Play weaves reality and myth into a tragicomedy told in Shepard’s affectionate style. Set in the American West, two families are united by violence, and as further harm and disorder ensues, love seeps up through the cracks, leaving each character to seek their own path to forgiveness and redemption.
