Cadence Theatre Company in partnership with Virginia Rep Announced Cast and Production Team of Sam Shepard’s A Lie of the Mind

Richmond, VA—Cadence Theatre Company in partnership with Virginia Rep was pleased to announce the cast for its third and final production of the 2014-2015 Season, A Lie of the Mind by Sam Shepard. Shepard’s critically acclaimed A Lie of the Mind won the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play and the New York Critics’ Circle Award for Best Play. Director Anna Johnson collaborated with composer and musician Drew Perkins, who created an original score for this production. A live band, under Perkins’ direction, accompanied each performance.

A Lie of the Mind featured an ensemble cast of eight actors, including Landon Nagel, Tamara Johnson, Alexander Sapp, Maura Burroughs, Lauren Leinhaas-Cook, Michael Goodwin, McLean Jesse and Justin Sease. The design team included: Rich Mason (Scenic and Lighting), Lara Koplin (Scenic Artist), James Murphy (Properties and Set Dressing), Paul DiPasquale (Special Properties), Jesse Senechal (Sound Design), Janet Rogers (Dialect Coaching), and Joel Ernst (Master Carpenter). Chandler Jez stage managed.

This Winner of the 1986 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play and New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best Play weaves reality and myth into a tragicomedy told in Shepard’s affectionate style. Set in the American West, two families are united by violence, and as further harm and disorder ensues, love seeps up through the cracks, leaving each character to seek their own path to forgiveness and redemption. A Lie of the Mind contains partial nudity. Parental discretion advised.

The culmination of the 2014/2015 pilot program! STAGE WRITE combined theatre training, oral presentation, creative writing and workforce readiness into an original, student-written presentation. Featuring students from Armstrong High School, Huguenot High School and Anna Julia Cooper Episcopal School.

presented Tony Kushner and Jeanine Tesori’s Hit Musical Caroline, or Change
as part of the Acts of Faith Festival

Richmond, VA–Cadence Theatre Company in partnership with Virginia Repertory Theatre was pleased to present the Richmond premiere of Tony Kushner and Jeanine Tesori’s Tony Award-nominated musical, Caroline, or Change. Caroline, or Change ran February 19-March 14, 2015 (opened February 21) with Acts of Faith Talk Back Sunday post-show discussions on Sunday, March 1st and Sunday, March 8th.

It’s 1963. Caroline is an African American laundress, a single mother serving a family in the Deep South. As the socio-political world violently spins into a new order, Caroline’s faith and relationships are tested, but through her sacrifices, the depth of human bonds endures. Kushner and Tesori’s musical is an inspired amalgam of blues, gospel and traditional Jewish melodies.

Caroline, or Change was directed by Chase Kniffen, with Musical Direction by Ryan Corbitt, Vocal Supervision by Stephen Rudlin, and Choreography by Leslie Owens-Harrington. The talented cast featured Richmond favorite Desiree Roots in the title role of Caroline. She was joined by Brandon McKinney, Karla Brown, Carolyn Minor-Daughtry, Katrinah Carol Lewis, Jessi Johnson, Lisa Kotula, Bianca Bryan, John Winn, Carolyn Meade, Stephanie M. Hill,Jim Dyk, Tyandria Jackson, Donathan Arnold, Sam Merkle, William A. Anderson and Andrew Boothby.

Scenic Design was by Chase Kniffen, Lighting Design was by Michael Jarrett, Costume Design was by Sarah Grady, Sound Design was by Derek Dumais, Properties Design was by James Murphy, Set Dressing was by James Murphy and Terrie Powers, Scenic Painting was by Terrie Powers, Set Construction was by Joel Ernst, Stage Management was by Hannah Zold Story, Music Consulting was by Anthony Smith and Production Management was by McLean Jesse (Cadence Theatre Company).

Caroline, or Change was presented at Theatre Gym at the Virginia Rep Center; 114 W. Broad Street, Richmond, Virginia 23220. Shows were weekly and ran: TH at 7 pm; FR and SAT at 8 pm; SUN at 4 pm; 7pm performance on TUES March 10th.
