Adult Acting Classes

Whether you’re interested in becoming a great actor or directing one, we’ve got a class for you! All classes are held at RPAA inside the Dominion Energy Arts Center in downtown Richmond, VA.

Dominion Energy Center is a physically accessible space with no stairs necessary to enter the building. If you need assistance, please email our Accessibility Coordinator, Laine, at laine@cadencetheatre.org. Requests should be made as early as possible to allow for adequate planning.

Deepening the Wisdom of Uta Hagen with Julie Fulcher-Davis

Continue your journey with the revolutionary acting techniques of legendary teacher and practitioner Uta Hagen. Whether working on solo material or exploring collaborative partner work, this course is designed to further expand your craft and refine your process. Through advanced exercises, text analysis, and scene work, you will develop a deeper understanding of Hagen’s core principles—with a continued emphasis on working from the inside out and finding truth in the moment.

Intro to Acting
with Adam Valentine

Looking to reignite or begin your journey into the world of acting? This class will address the tenets of given circumstances, intentions, objectives, obstacles and personalization through a series of exercises and use of text. Explore the actor's tools, including breath, voice, and physicality to build confidence and connect to the self and the human experience.

Adam Valentine

Instructor

Adam Valentine (He/Him) is a Richmond-based actor, director and educator. A former company member with PlayMakers Repertory Company, his regional credits include work with PlayMakers Rep, Cadence Theatre, Richmond Shakespeare, Virginia Rep, TheatreLAB, 5th Wall Theatre, and Firehouse Theatre. Adam has taught acting at the high school and collegiate levels and holds an MFA in Acting from UNC Chapel Hill and a BA in Acting and Directing from VCU.

Julie Fulcher-Davis

Instructor

Julie Fulcher-Davis (she/her) received her BFA in Acting from Shenandoah Conservatory. She spent most of her twenties in NYC, furthering her training and pursuing the Broadway dream before settling in Richmond and choosing to stay and make it her home. Julie has had a long professional career as an accomplished award-winning actor, director, playwright, composer, voice over talent and teaching artist. She has taught Acting at the University of Richmond for twenty years. Favorite directing projects include Every Brilliant Thing (RTCC Best Director of a Play), Everybody, The Roommates, and Facing East (RTCC Nominee for Best Director). Favorite roles onstage include the one woman show The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in The Universe (Inscoe Award), Amanda Wingfield in The Glass Menagerie, The Witch in Into the Woods (Phoebe Winner, Richmond, VA) and her Richmond debut many moons ago—Delores in Olympus on My Mind (Phoebe Winner). Julie is a member of Actors Equity and The Dramatist Guild. Julie is delighted to be returning as a teaching artist with Cadence.
